Profile : Margo Johnson, Ph.D.
Biography
Dr. Johnson is originally from the Northwest. She joined UBC, Inc in 2007 as a clinical nurse and biofeedback therapist. She began her education with and interest in engineering, but was inspired after reading “New Mind, New Body” an introduction in biofeedback published in the 70’s. Impressed by biofeedback’s elegant utility in response to many health problems and its focus on the mind/body connection, she made a career change to healthcare.
Education
She attended Shoreline Community College and received an Associated Degree in Nursing, while providing biofeedback in an outpatient setting for one of the early researches in the field. She went on to join the nursing staff at one of the early pain management programs in the Washington, at Swedish Hospital. There she attended an RNB program through Seattle Pacific University. She joined the first CARF accredited pain management program in Washington as their biofeedback therapist in 1987. She returned to graduate school at the University Of Washington School Of Nursing. There she pursued her interest in biofeedback, neurofeedback (brainwave feedback) and sleep disturbances accompanying chronic pain. This research fellowship training was sponsored by the National Institute of Nursing Research, a division of NIH. Her doctoral research project was entitled: A Comparison of Biofeedback and Neurofeedback for Sleep Disturbance Accompanying Chronic Pain.
Professional Background
Dr Johnson has been providing biofeedback training and nursing services for nearly 30 years. She has enjoyed working with injured workers as part of interdisciplinary treatment in both outpatient and inpatient settings. She has also provided biofeedback training for stress management clinics and an addiction treatment center. She holds a Senior Fellow level certification in general biofeedback from the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America and is certified in neurofeedback. She is a member of the Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. As a past president of the Biofeedback Society of Washington she helped lead the organization’s involvement during the healthcare reform era. She is a past member of the Rehabilitation Interest Group.
